Getting Rid Of Distractions When Working As A Virtual Assistant
Natasha is a virtual assistant, handling projects for global clients from home. She has set up a virtual workplace at home, carrying out all day to day office affairs from her comfort zone without incurring any commuting costs and other expenses. She fails to meet deadlines and end up with heaps of pending work everyday despite her sincere attempts to complete her assigned set of tasks on time. Even though she puts in more hours than regular working hours, her productivity has dropped and quality of work has also suffered considerably. Upon careful examination in her work pattern, Natasha realized that she was wasting a lot of time due to distractions.
Like Natasha, many other virtual assistants often suffer from lower productivity and poor concentration problems due to the distractions in a virtual office arrangement. Telecommuters, who have made home their office, have to deal with a lot of distractions, including family members, pets, children, friends and other personal issues that are not likely to be present at an actual office. Due to these distractions, productivity, quality and overall efficiency suffers a lot. Therefore, it is necessary to block out these distractions in order to increase your productivity and win more clients.
The first thing you need to do for getting rid of distractions is to identify factors that creates hindrances in your work and affects your quality of work. Some of the most common factors that contribute to distractions and the way you can get rid of those distractions are as follows:

Over-communication: When working online from home as a virtual assistant, there is a tendency among most people to indulge in personal calls at the virtual workplace or exchange too many emails. Although taking personal calls or sending mails may just need a few minutes but they can weaken your concentration power and set back your progress by a good deal of time. Therefore, try to refrain from indulging in personal chat or phone calls or sending too many emails if you are working on something that requires a high level of concentration. Close down instant messengers, social networking sites during your work time and concentrate on your task.
Web surfing- As there is no one to keep a track of your web surfing at your virtual workplace, there is a tendency to spend too much on random searches. In an actual office, IT staff keeps a check on your Internet usage but there is no one at your home office and hence one gets distracted. Set up a time to view your web favorites and social media sites or indulge in random searches. Set out a time for leisure surfing everyday.
Fix a schedule: Find out a time when you are most productive and work during those hours. Take a break when you seem tired and fit in things in your work schedule that you enjoy doing. Put aside certain time of the day for things that you do for leisure.
Getting rid of distractions may seem a difficult job but one has to make sincere attempts to block out the hindrances in order to generate quality work.
